Bhadra River Project Dam
A 1965 multipurpose dam on the Bhadra River, on the Bhadravati–Tarikere border
The Bhadra Dam holds back the Bhadra River near Lakkavalli, on the border between Bhadravati and Tarikere, and has served Davanagere and Chitradurga's irrigation and drinking water needs since 1965 alongside a modest hydropower output. It's one of the older, larger reservoirs in this part of Karnataka.
Its backwaters border the Bhadra Tiger Reserve, where the state's forest department runs jeep safaris in search of tigers, leopards, elephants and gaur, with the Jungle Lodges & Resorts property at Lakkavalli among the options for staying nearby. Locally, people often call this same reservoir the BRP Dam — short for Bhadra River Project — which is listed separately on TripAdvisor but refers to the identical dam and reservoir.
Highlights
- 59 m high and 1.7 km long, commissioned in 1965 for irrigation, drinking water and about 39 MW of power
- Backwaters border the Bhadra Tiger Reserve — tigers, leopards, elephants and gaur
- Locally also called the BRP (Bhadra River Project) Dam — the same reservoir appears again on this list under that short name
