Kodachadri
A 1,343 m sacred peak above the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary
At 1,343 metres, Kodachadri is the highest point in Shivamogga district and one of Karnataka's more spiritually significant treks — the summit shrine, Sarvajna Peetha, is tied to Adi Shankaracharya, and the Kollur Mookambika Temple at the base of the hill takes its name from the same legend.
Most treks start from Nittur village, roughly 9–12 km one way with a full round trip taking most of a day; a jeep can cover part of the climb for those who'd rather skip the lower stretch. Hidlumane Falls sits on the trail about three-quarters of the way up, and a forest permit is now required on both the trekking and jeep routes.
Highlights
- Sarvajna Peetha, a small stone shrine where Adi Shankaracharya is said to have meditated
- Sits inside the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary, home to the endangered lion-tailed macaque
- A moderate 9–12 km trek from Nittur village, or a jeep partway up
Getting there
There isn't a Malnad Yatra bus route covering Thirthahalli–Hosanagara yet, so this one needs a private vehicle or taxi to Nittur.
