Kundadri

A rocky Jain pilgrimage hill just off the Thirthahalli–Agumbe road

DistanceAbout 20 km from Thirthahalli, 12 km from Agumbe
Best timeOctober–February; busy around Makara Sankranti

Kundadri rises as a single dome of rock in the forest along the Thirthahalli–Agumbe road, crowned by a small 17th-century Jain temple to Parshwanatha, the 23rd tirthankara. Two natural rock-cut ponds beside the temple are said to have supplied water to monks who once sheltered here, including the hill's namesake, Acharya Kundakunda.

An all-weather road now runs most of the way up, though the final stretch is steep enough that a private vehicle or two-wheeler is the practical option rather than the site's tracked buses. It's become a popular sunrise and sunset spot, with views over the twisting Agumbe ghat road below.

Highlights

  • An 826 m monolithic rock hill topped by a 17th-century Parshwanatha Jain temple
  • Named for Acharya Kundakunda, a Digambar Jain monk said to have meditated here
  • A popular sunrise/sunset viewpoint over the Thirthahalli–Agumbe ghat road

Getting there

The Thirthahalli to Udupi route runs via Agumbe — get off near the Agumbe/Guddekeri turn and it's a short local ride up to Kundadri.
