Tunga Anicut Dam
A diversion dam on the Tunga at Gajanur, inside Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary
The Tunga Anicut Dam falls within Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary, and forest department notes describe it as shelter for otters and water birds along this stretch of the Tunga — it's as much a wildlife feature as an engineering one from that angle. Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary, an island nesting site for migratory birds each monsoon, is officially part of the same sanctuary.
This is the same structure that most travel writeups call “Gajanur Dam,” after the village it sits beside — we've given that name its own page too, with the reservoir's engineering specifics, since that's how it's most commonly known locally.
Highlights
- Sits within Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary and shelters otters and water birds
- The same structure most locals call “Gajanur Dam” — see that page for the engineering detail
- Right next to Sakrebailu Elephant Camp and close to Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary
Getting there
The Thirthahalli to Shivamogga route passes right by Gajanur village.
