Kavale Durga Fort
A ruined 16th-century Keladi Nayaka hill fort with sweeping Western Ghats views
Kavale Durga Fort is a 16th-century Keladi Nayaka hill fort perched high above the Varahi valley, now largely in ruins but still tracing seven layers of fortification along with the remains of palaces, granaries and guard posts. Shrines to Virabhadra, Mallikarjuna and Durga Devi sit within the old complex.
Getting to the top means a genuine trek — about 3 km uphill from the base village, on rocky and sometimes slippery terrain — which keeps it quieter than the district's more accessible forts, and rewards the climb with wide views over the Western Ghats.
Highlights
- A 16th-century hill fort built by the Keladi Nayakas, at roughly 1,350 m elevation
- Seven layers of fortification, along with ruined palaces, granaries, guard posts and small shrines
- A moderate ~3 km uphill trek from the base village to the fort summit
Getting there
The Konanduru to Thirthahalli route ends in Thirthahalli; Kavale Durga Fort is a further ~20 km by local transport, plus a trek to the summit.
